Location
Located in picturesque Canungra Valley Gold Coast Hinterland, O'Reilly's Canungra Valley Vineyards is a boutique vineyard and historic Queenslander homestead that is dedicated to fine food and wine.
O'Reilly's Canungra Valley Vineyards is one of the premium boutique cellar doors in South East Queensland and are the proud producers of fine quality, award-winning wines. The vineyard is a scenic 60 minute drive south of Brisbane and 35 minutes drive west of the Gold Coast. This area is one of Queensland's newly emerging wine growing regions. Canungra Valley soil is well suited to grapes, as the rich river loam has built up over centuries by the flooding creek and a naturally occuring layer of gravel a metre under the surface allows for excellent drainage.
The vineyard provides the perfect venue for casual picnic basket or restaurant dining, social group outing, off-site function venue or a unique wedding venue.
O'Reilly Family
The vineyard is owned and operated by the O'Reilly family, famous for providing legendary hospitality in the area for over 80 years.
As pioneers of O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat, Mountain Villas and Lost World Spa in nearby Lamington National Park, the O'Reilly family name is iconic in this region, so it is only fitting that our premium range carries the family name. Shane O'Reilly, currently Managing Director, represents the third generation to live and work at the famous Guesthouse, his uncle and father Vince and Pete, the second generation, and Bernard, Viola and Molly, the original pioneers.
The Homestead
The heart of O'Reilly's Canungra Valley Vineyards is a grand Queensland homestead, 'Killowen', filled with people passionate about fine wine and food.
The Vineyard Homestead is a fine example of early Queensland architecture and was built in 1858 by the Devine family in Warwick. It was moved to its present position in 1989. The house was cut into three pieces, and lifted onto the back of trucks. Over twelve power lines needed to be moved and many tree limbs lopped to accommodate the size of the house as it travelled to Canungra.
It was closed up for many years, and then Shane O'Reilly saw it and fell in love with it. He was looking for a good excuse to buy it, when several of his friends suggested that Canungra would be a good spot for growing grapes. That was all the encouragement he needed, and his vision for growing quality wine grapes in Canungra has certainly paid off. Many hours of restoration and care went into bringing the house back to its former glory. Many of the antiques you see in the house today were originally in the house, and have also been restored.
The house also has a resident ghost, a member of the Devine family who owned the house for over sixty five years. There is a picture of her above the cellar door, standing on the verandah. The story goes that when the picture was taken she was standing next to the photographer with her daughter. She died a couple of months later and her image appeared in the photo when it was later developed. Many of the present staff are convinced she made the move with the house from Warwick. Sugar bowls have mysteriously moved, pictures leapt from walls and coffee pots smashed.
O'Reilly's Canungra Valley Vineyards is open seven days from 10:00am - 4:30pm daily.
The Vineyard
The vines were planted in September 1997 by a team of volunteers from the local community, many of whom returned in the summer of 2000 to harvest our first vintage of Semillon and Chambourcin. It wasn't long before the rewards of Shane's vision and all that hard work were forthcoming, with a silver medal awarded for the aptly named Shane O'Reilly Reserve Shiraz 2000 at the 2002 San Francisco International Wineshow followed up with a gold for the Shiraz 2001 and a silver for the Viola O'Reilly Reserve Cabernet 2001 at the same show in 2003. The 2004 and 2005 San Francisco Wine judges were similarly impressed by the 2002 and 2003 vintages as well.
Eight of the fifteen acres of land belonging to the Vineyard are 'under vine', consisting of 4,000 vines of primarily Chambourcin and Semillon grape.
Chambourcin is a subtropical grape variety that is ideally suited to our climate here in South East Queensland. Chambourcin produces good-quality, ruby-coloured wines that have a reasonably full, slightly herbaceous flavour and aroma. This grape is used to produce our lush sparkling red, still red wine and port.
Semillon is a white wine variety often grown in the Hunter Valley. This grape variety makes a dry, grassy style of white wine. The crop is harvested in February, before the traditional wet season. The semillon grapes turn from a pale green colour to a golden yellow before ripening.
